Do I Need a Licence to Do Lashes in Ontario?

This is the first question almost every new artist asks, and the answer surprises people.

Ontario does not require a provincial licence to perform lash extensions, lash lifts, or tinting.

There is no government exam. There is no board you register with. You do not need an esthetics diploma to legally offer the service.

That does not mean there are no rules.

What Ontario Actually Regulates

Ontario regulates the setting, not the certificate.

Lash services fall under personal service settings, which local public health units inspect. They look at your sanitation, your tool disinfection, your single use items, your waste handling, and your workspace.

A health inspector will not ask to see your lash certificate. They will ask how you clean your tweezers.

Your municipality may also require a business licence, and this varies by city. Confirm yours with your local municipal office and public health unit before you take your first client.

So Why Get Certified at All?

Because almost everything else in your career asks for it.

Insurance providers generally require proof of training before they will issue professional liability coverage. Most salons and studios will ask to see a certificate before renting you a room. Many professional suppliers require one to open a trade account.

And your client is trusting you to work millimetres from their eye.

What an Unregulated Industry Actually Means for You

When no one is checking, the quality of training varies enormously.

A certificate can represent two hundred hours or two hours. Both produce a piece of paper.

So the question worth asking is not whether a course is certified. It is what you will actually understand when you leave.

Ask whether you will learn why a lash behaves the way it does, or only the order of the steps. Ask what happens when something goes wrong on a real client. Ask what support exists after the course ends.

The Takeaway

Ontario does not require a licence to do lashes. Your insurance, your landlord, and your clients effectively do.

Choose your training based on what you will understand afterward, not on what the certificate is called.

Confirm your own municipal and public health requirements before you begin taking clients. These are set locally and they do change.
